Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Rwanda

Upon your flight arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be greeted by a representative from your hotel who will be on hand to provide transportation to your hotel. If you arrive early, you may choose to explore the city and engage in activities of your own choosing, such as visiting the local craft markets to find unique souvenirs like jewelry, sculptures, musical instruments, fabrics, leather, pottery, and other hand-woven items. Keep in mind that any activities you choose to participate in today will be at your own expense.

Day 2: Safari adventure in Akagera National Park

Embark on a wildlife safari in Akagera National Park

After breakfast, set out on a journey to Akagera National Park, located in the northeastern region of Rwanda on the border with Tanzania. The park offers a unique contrast to the hilly and rocky terrain of most of Rwanda, featuring savannah grasslands and wetlands. It is the only place in Rwanda where visitors can spot a variety of large mammals such as buffalo, elephants, zebras, giraffes, lions, and antelopes like bushbuck, topi, oribi, waterbuck, roan antelope, duiker, bohor reedbuck, klipspringer, impala, and the largest antelope, the Cape Eland. The park is also home to over 500 bird species. After lunch, take an afternoon game drive to catch a glimpse of the diverse wildlife that calls this park home

Day 3: Scenic boat safari and return to Kigali

Discover the beauty of River Kagera and the tragic history of Rwanda

Begin your day with a mesmerizing boat safari on River Kagera. Take in the sights of crocodiles and hippos basking in the shallow waters, as well as the opportunity to see a variety of water birds such as the rare shoebill stork, crowned cranes, kingfishers, and cormorants up close. After lunch, head south to Nyamata town to visit the Nyamata Genocide Memorial Church and learn about the events of the 1994 Rwanda genocide. Upon your return to Kigali, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre for a deeper understanding of the tragedy that occurred in Rwanda and the impact it had on the people and the country.

Day 4: Explore the biodiversity of Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Begin your journey to Nyungwe Forest National Park, a destination renowned for its rich biodiversity and home to over 310 bird species, 75 mammal species and different primates like chimpanzees, blue monkeys, Mona monkeys and the owl-faced monkey. Take a break for lunch en-route in Butare before arriving at your hotel later in the day. Enjoy a warm local dinner before retiring to your room or taking in the views from the restaurant.

Day 5: Experience the thrill of chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest

Rise early to embark on a thrilling chimpanzee tracking adventure in either the Cyamudongo or Uwinka sections of the forest, both of which together boast a total population of 80 chimpanzees.

After your trek, you can choose to relax at your hotel or participate in an additional activity recommended by your AA Safaris’ consultant when you book your tour.

Optional Activity: Take on the Canopy Walk Challenge

In the afternoon, dare to take on the Canopy walk, a 50-meter elevated journey above a deep gorge. This activity is not suitable for those with a fear of heights and may be challenging for the faint-hearted. But it will give you the chance to spot animals and birds that live in the upper canopy of the forest like the blue monkeys.

Day 6: Take on the Canopy Walk and Waterfall Hike Challenge

Start the day with an exciting canopy walk, an elevated journey of 50 meters above a deep gorge. Please note, this activity is not recommended for those who are afraid of heights and can be challenging for the faint-hearted. But you will have the chance to spot animals and birds that live in the upper canopy of the forest, including the elusive blue monkey.

Refresh your senses in the afternoon by taking a hike through the forest and small streams, ending with a mesmerizing view of the waterfalls. This hike is a great way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the forest while getting some exercise.

Day 7: Head to Lake Kivu (Kibuye)

Travel to the eastern shores of Lake Kivu to Kibuye after breakfast. Take a walk around the town or visit the Ndaba falls then in the afternoon visit the nearby islands on a rented boat. However, the activities you engage in on this day will be at your expense.

Day 8: Journey to the heart of Volcanoes National Park

Begin your journey to Volcanoes National Park, a 4-hour drive to the northeast of Musanze town, located near the Virunga volcano range. After checking in to your hotel, take some time to relax and prepare for the next day’s energy-inducing activities.

Day 9: Gorilla tracking adventure

Rise early to embark on an awe-inspiring gorilla tracking adventure. Drive to the park headquarters, Office Rwandais du Tourisme et Des Park Nationaux (ORTPN), where you will receive a briefing from the park ranger, be divided into groups, and be escorted to the starting point of the tracking trails. Accompanied by your park guide, you will set off on the trail, searching for the gorillas. Once they are located, you will have the opportunity to sit silently and watch them go about their daily lives in their natural habitat. This encounter is a unique opportunity to observe these majestic creatures up close and in their natural surroundings

Day 10: Return to Kigali City

Begin the journey back to Kigali City, where your tour guide/driver will drop you off at the Kigali International Airport for your return flight or at your hotel.

Your safari with AA Safaris has come to an end, but if you desire to spend an extra day in the city, please inform us at AA Safaris and we will arrange for an additional night’s stay in a hotel for an additional fee.”
