Welcome to Tanzania! Your journey begins as you step off the plane at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Here, you will be greeted by your guide/driver who will take you to your lodge where you will spend your first night.

During your first day, you will have the opportunity to relax and get settled in after your long flight. You can take a walk around the lodge, enjoy a meal and take a nap before embarking on your adventure the following day.

If you are taking the tour between January and May, or in November and December, you will have the opportunity to visit Lake Manyara National Park on day 2. This park is known for its diverse wildlife, including elephants, lions, and many species of birds. It is also home to the famous tree-climbing lions, which are unique to this park.

Your guide will provide you with all the information you need about the park, including the best spots to see wildlife and the best time of day to visit. They will also ensure that you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience while visiting the park.

Exploring the Local Culture: Day 2A - A Visit to Mto wa Mbu Village

On Day 2A of your tour, we invite you to discover the diversity of culture at Mto wa Mbu village. This vibrant community is home to 18,000 locals from 120 different tribes, making it a melting pot of different cultures and traditions.

As you explore the village, you will have the opportunity to visit farms, schools, churches, and markets, giving you a glimpse into the daily lives of the locals. Take a stroll through the local markets and put your haggling skills to the test while buying fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, and spices.

One of the highlights of the tour is a visit to the wood workshops where skilled Makonde carpenters create intricate wooden household items, masks, and figurines. You will have the opportunity to see the carpenters at work and purchase some of their beautiful creations as souvenirs.

Please note that between June and October, AA Safaris recommends visiting Tarangire National Park on Day 2 instead. On Day 4, we invite you to join us in the search for the Great Migration. This is a full day safari, where we will go on an early morning drive for close-up opportunities with the animals. We will go deeper into the Serengeti in search of the wildebeest as they make their annual journey, also known as one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the World.’

As we follow the migratory animals, we will also have the opportunity to watch predators like lions, hyenas, cheetahs, and leopards as they follow the wildebeest and zebras to feed themselves. It is an incredible sight to see the intricate relationship between predator and prey in the wild.

Please note that the location of the migration is affected by the annual rain patterns and is currently affected by global climate change. In December and the start of January, it is hard to predict the migration location; whether it is on the Serengeti or Ngorongoro side of the park. This will affect your accommodation option.

The Ngorongoro crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to an abundance of wildlife. Within the crater, you will see cheetahs, jackals, Thompson’s gazelle, flamingo, and uniquely the Big 5; lions, elephants, buffalos, rhinos, leopards. As well as for those who enjoy birding as an activity, there are around 400 bird species to add your drive.

As an optional activity, we recommend taking a guided walk through the Ngorongoro highlands. These walks are led by an armed ranger and offer a unique opportunity to combine culture and wildlife in one amazing landscape. You will see volcanoes, forests, craters, and encounter the Masai people who inhabit the area’s highlands.
