Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Rwanda

A representative from your hotel will be at Kigali International Airport to pick you up upon your flight arrival.

Depending on what time you arrive, you can engage in activities within the city like visit some local craft markets within the city center to shop for souvenirs like jewelry, sculptures, musical instruments, fabrics, leather, pottery and weaved items. However, all activities engaged in today are at your own expense.

Day 2: Game drive in Akagera national park

Start your drive to Akagera national park after breakfast.

Located in the northeastern part of Rwanda along Rwanda’s border with Tanzania, its terrain is not hilly or rocky like most parts of Rwanda. it is the only Savannah national park in Rwanda and the only place to sight most of the large mammals while on safari.This park is home to over 500 bird species, has buffaloes, elephants, zebras, giraffes, lions and different types of antelopes like bush bucks, Topis, Oribis, water-buck, roan antelope and duiker, bohor reed buck, klipspringer, impala and world largest antelope – the Cape eland. After lunch, go on an afternoon game drive within the park.

Day 3: A boat safari then return to Kigali

Join in on a morning boat safari on River Kagera where you will spot crocodiles and hippos laze in shallow water, see water birds close up like the rare shoebill storks, crowned cranes, kingfishers and cormorants. After lunch, drive south of Kigali to Nyamata town to visit and tour the Nyamata Genocide Memorial church then when you return to the city, you can visit the Kigali Genocide memorial center where you will be beguiled with the tales of the 1994 Rwanda genocide.

Day 4 / Day 5 and 6 Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe forest,

Travel to Nyungwe forest national park

Drive to the Nyungwe forest national park famous for being the habitat for over 310 bird species, 75 mammal species including chimpanzees, blue monkeys, Mona monkeys, and the owl-faced monkeys. 

Have lunch en-route in Butare so arrive at your hotel later in the day and have a local hot dinner before retiring to your room or enjoy the views from the restaurant.

Wake up very early to start the tracking in trails of either the Cyamudongo or Uwinka sections of the forest. Combined, the total number of chimpanzees in both sections of the park forest is 80.

After the trekking, you can choose to relax in your hotel or choose another available activity recommended by an AA Safaris’ consultant during booking your tour.

Optional activity: Canopy walk

In the afternoon, you can take part in the Canopy walk which takes you on a 50-meter walk above the deep gorge. This is an activity not for those afraid of heights and fainthearted people. It will allow you to see animals and birds that live in the upper canopy of the forest like the blue monkeys.

In the afternoon, refresh yourself with a hike through the forest and small streams down to the waterfalls.

Day 7: Head to Lake Kivu (Kibuye)

Travel to the eastern shores of Lake Kivu to Kibuye after breakfast. Take a walk around the town or visit the Ndaba falls then in the afternoon visit the nearby islands on a rented boat. However, the activities you engage in on this day will be at your expense.

Day 8/ 9 and Gorilla Trekking

Travel to Volcanoes National Park

Set off for a 4-hour drive northeast to Musanze town, near the Virunga Volcano range. Relax after checking in to your hotel as you prepare for the next day’s energetic activity.

Wake up very early and drive to the park headquarters, Office Rwandais du Tourisme et Des Park Nationaux (ORTPN), where the park ranger will brief you, divide you into groups then escort you to the starting point of the tracking trails then you will head down with your park guide. Once the gorillas have been located, you will sit silently and watch them go through their daily routines in their natural habitat.

Day 10: Departure

Drive back to Kigali city where the tour guide/driver can drop you at the Kigali International Airport to catch your return flight or at your hotel. 

This ends your safari with AA Safaris.
