Have a hot meal before you set off for the road trip to Kitgum town where you will stop over in towns like Luwero for fruits and Gulu for lunch. As you drive, admire Nakasongola district which is an evergreen Savannah grassland area with a unique geological feature. Arrive at your accommodation in Kitgum, check-in and visit Apoka Tourism Center which is the park’s tourism hub so visitors can go on a shopping spree in the crafts shop onsite for books and souvenirs.
Early after breakfast start the morning game drive in the park where you will view the wild come to life right from the Big 5; lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes with other animals like antelopes and bird species.The biggest percentage of wildlife in Kidepo are predators like lions, leopards, black-backed jackals and the bat-eared fox. An estimate of about 12 species of antelopes are also harbored by the park. Among them are the Jackson’s hartebeest, eland, klipspringer and the oribi. Have lunch at Apoka Tourism Center which is on close to the park headquarters then relax then go out for an evening gamed drive to see the wild game prepare for the night’s rest as you too will do shortly after.
Take the 25 km Lonyiri nature walk in the extensive shrub land which makes part of the park in the wilderness which is a habitat for untamed wild life. The main idea for introduction of the Lonyiri nature walk is to capture the imagination and creativity of tourists by giving them a particular pursuit when involved in a nature walk. You will see some of the 470 bird species residing here like the silver bird, Yellow-billed Shrike, Hoopoe, Mosque Swallow, Nubian woodpecker, little Weaver among others. Then the second activity for the day is a community walk to see the Karamojong in their way of life; manyatta homesteads which are their temporary houses, see their beautiful bright colored clothes and adornments ( necklaces, earrings, headgear, bangles, bracelets) plus you can buy a shuka (traditional cloth that makes traditional Karamojong swinging skirts)and crafts like the sitting stool that is sat on by men only. Listen to their cultural songs and watch them jump high in the sky as they dance with sticks.
